Canine Field Day 2018

Enjoy a day in the park with your furry friend on Saturday, May 5th from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at Rock Quarry Park! Join us for Canine Field Day, where you and your dog will have an opportunity to watch and participate in activities and competitions. There will be something for everyone and every dog!

For the third consecutive year, DPR is proud to welcome back SkyHoundz Classic World Canine Disc Championship Series, the world’s largest disc-dog series, sponsored by Hyperflite. This year we will be hosting the official State Championship, which is composed of freestyle and distance/accuracy combined. Participants will have (two) 90-second rounds of freestyle and (one) 60-second round of distance/accuracy, with winners determined by totaling all three rounds. Registration opens at 10 AM sharp, and the competition will begin at 10:30 AM. Whether you are participating or spectating, come lend your support to these four-legged athletes! For more information, visit the SkyHoundz website at https://skyhoundz.com

If you and your pup are new to canine sports, come strut your stuff on the Beginners Obstacle Course, open to all ages and breeds of dog. No registration required, just a need for speed! Zig zag your way through weave poles, jump hurdles, attempt the ramp, and leap through hoops! This basic course will serve as a great introduction to the sport of Canine Agility, whose popularity has been ever growing since 1978. Many dog owners agree that the root of most behavior problems is boredom; this is because dogs were bred to work. Whether you are trying to exercise your dog physically and mentally, build a stronger bond with your furry friend, or trying to solve behavior issues, agility is a proven way to improve relationships with your pet.

If dog training is of interest to you, make sure to stop by “The Yadid’It Dog” tent, where Shana Yadid, ABCDT, has arranged two complimentary trainer-led pack walks, offering her knowledge of obedience training. Space is limited so get there early to sign up!

Additionally, there will be ongoing canine activities at the event. Take a shot at “Sniff It out!” where your dog will have to find a treat in a three-cup-trick, or “Bob for Dogs” where treats will be hidden in a ball pit. High energy dogs are encouraged to play “Toss up!” where we will find which Durham canine can catch the most tennis balls in 30-seconds. If your pup has mastered the command “roll-over”, they can compete in “Stop, Drop, & Roll” to see who can have the most consecutive roll-overs in 30-seconds!

DPR Canine Recreation will also be holding a Canine Food Drive, where all donations will go to The Animal Protection Society of Durham. Feel free to drop off food, bowls, toys, and leashes for all the pups still waiting, and wishing, for their forever homes.
