Step up your game and play like a champion with Durham Parks and Recreation! Registration is now open for a variety of youth and adult athletics programs. From tennis lessons and youth sports samplers to adult spring softball and pickleball tournaments, we are finding ways to stay active and stay safe during the pandemic. Here's a short and sweet guide featuring some of the sports programs you won't want to miss this Spring... Community Free Play Basketball We're offering free court access to all individuals and families on our outdoor basketball courts. Courts are available first come first serve. Volunteer of the Month: Cedric Burke

By: Mal Atkinson, Resource Coordinator It is with much enthusiasm that we recognize Cedric Burke as February’s Volunteer of the Month! Cedric, along with members of the Tobacco Road FC, has been volunteering with DPR for the past four years with programs such as Little Tykes Soccer, DPR Soccer Academy and the Youth Sport Sampler. He has spent the bulk of his life in Durham and his commitment to the Durham community is evident in everything he does. When asked why he elected to volunteer with DPR Cedric says he is passionate about giving back to a city that has given him so much. Specifically, he enjoys playing a role in helping to shape the future of our youth. Additionally, he believes that a variety of life lessons can be learned through the teamwork, humility and camaraderie required to be a successful member of a soccer team. Cedric finds joy in seeing the youth he volunteers with reach milestones. He says that “It's incredibly gratifying to build relationships with the youn

We're egg-cited to announce several Egg Hunt opportunities taking place across the City for you and your family to enjoy! Whether you want to pickup supplies to enjoy an Egg Hunt at home or swing by one of our Cultural Heritage Parks for an in-person Egg Hunt, spaces are sure to fill up fast for these family friendly events! And don't leave your canine friend out of the fun, there is a dog-friendly event for them too! Before you come, make sure you preregister (see links below for specific Egg Hunt events) and bring a basket or bag to collect eggs! Here's a quick guide to make sure you don't miss out on the fun... The world was facing a cholera pandemic. In the midst of a contentious election Americans were heavily divided, socially and politically. Our ancestors were questioning their history, and who they were as a country. Sounds a little familiar doesn’t it? In spite of all this there are some things that always retain some semblance of normalcy. Be it 1860 or 2021, folks need to go to the store. Whether it’s Walmart, Food Lion, or the West Point Mill, we all have to shop. One of the projects that the Cultural Heritage staff at Durham Parks and Recreation has been working on is indexing several sales ledgers kept by John Cabe McCown. McCown owned and operated the West Point Mill in the mid-1800s. These ledgers run from the late 1850s to the late 1870s, and record transactions at the West Point mill, store, and post office ( ch
