Play like a Champion
Step up your game and play like a champion with Durham Parks and Recreation! Registration is now open for a variety of youth and adult athletics programs. From tennis lessons and youth sports samplers to adult spring softball and pickleball tournaments, we are finding ways to stay active and stay safe during the pandemic. Here's a short and sweet guide featuring some of the sports programs you won't want to miss this Spring...
- Community Free Play Basketball
- We're offering free court access to all individuals and families on our outdoor basketball courts. Courts are available first come first serve. The City will turn the lights on at the park from sunset till 10 p.m.
- Located at the following parks: Bethesda Park, Southern Boundaries Park, Sherwood Park, Morreene Road Park (visit ActiveNet for specific dates each park is open)
- Community Free Play Tennis
- We're offering free tennis court access to all individuals and families on designated outdoor tennis courts. Courts are available first come first serve. The City will turn the lights on at the park from sunset till 10 p.m.
- Located at the following parks: Southern Boundaries Park, Elmira Park, Garrett Road Park, Rock Quarry Park, WD Hill Park, Whipporwill Park (visit ActiveNet for specific dates each park is open)
- Introduction to Pickleball
- If you are new to the sport or have just started playing and want some additional instruction in a fun and friendly atmosphere, then this Pickleball Clinic is for you! You will learn how to keep score, the rules of the game, and tips to improve your confidence on the court. Registration is open for adults (18 & over) and limited to 8 participants.
- Activity Meeting Dates: March 2 - 18, Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. - 9 a.m.
- Located at Garrett Road Park
- Spring Sling Pickleball Tournament
- The Spring Sling Pickleball Tournament is a dedicated doubles, gender inclusive (male/male, female/female, male/female, or gender fluid) event open to all adults (18 & Over). All skill levels are invited to play. The deadline to register is Monday, April 5, 2021 and is limited to 60 participants.
- Activity Meeting Date: Saturday, April 17, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
- Located at Bethesda Park
- Youth Basketball Academy 10-12
- Come out to Walltown Park Recreation Center for a two day training program. The focus will be on skill development, fundamentals, and improvement. This program is non-competitive and no-contact; participants will not play games against one another. All participants must wear a face mask for the duration of the program.
- Activity Meeting Date: Thursdays, March 11 & 18, 5 p.m. - 5:45 p.m.
- Located in the Gymnasium at Walltown Park Recreation Center
- Youth Sports Sampler
- This sampler is designed to introduce different sports, basic fundamentals of each sport, and provide exposure to Walltown Park. The sampler promotes an atmosphere of fun and learning in a controlled safe environment. For specific sports being covered in each sampler, visit ActiveNet. Samplers are split up by age group: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12

- Spring Adult Softball
- Swing batter, batter swing! Gather your team and suit up to take the field! The adult softball league plays March - June, with options for Men or Co-Rec play. Participants must register as a team and individuals should reach out to the league coordinator. Games will be played at various fields depending on the league including Southern Boundaries Park, Valley Springs Park and Pineywood Park.
- Registration Fees: $475 per team with a $12 fee per non-city resident.
- Registration Dates: February 1 - March 1
