West Point Pavilion Project Updates

By: Durham Parks Foundation

West Point on the Eno is getting a new Environmental Education Pavilion this summer! The NC State Summer Design Studio, helmed by Ellen Cassilly of Ellen Cassilly Architects, and Randy Lanou, Erik Melman and Scott Metheny of BuildSense, has selected this site as their 2018 project.

We’re excited now to unveil the winning design for the Pavilion! The students from the NC State Summer Design Studio have outdone themselves, creating a design that will meet educational programming needs while also providing a new native prairie habitat for the public to explore. We look forward to sharing the final product with you at the end of July. In the meantime, we’re excited to show you a preview of this new gem of the West Point of the Eno!

We hope that you’re as impressed with the space these students are creating for park visitors like you. This new facility will activate the underutilized northern section of the West Point Park, allowing DPR staff to add Environmental Education programming and to expand conservation efforts.

Pavilion will include outdoor classroom space, locked storage space, a natural prairie habitat, electricity and water. The winning student model will be somewhat modified by the entire group and Durham Parks and Recreation staff.

Students are responsible for every step of the process, from the initial design through construction to the final finishing touches, all in just 10 weeks! In the end, they will deliver a $100,000 facility to the citizens of Durham. The Durham Parks Foundation needs your support to raise the $40,000 needed to purchase materials for this project.

You can be a part of this ground-breaking project (yes, we meant to do that) by joining the Durham Parks Foundation as an Inaugural Member or a Corporate Partner. ALL inaugural Members and Partners will be commemorated at the Environmental Education Pavilion, as well as on the Durham Parks Foundation website.

Keep up with this fast-paced project through the Durham Parks Foundation Facebook page or by joining the Foundation newsletter. Or, come by the site during the Festival for the Eno to watch the build in progress!

If this project sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the 3rd such project from the NC State Summer Design Build Studio to be built in Durham since the studio's inception 8 years ago. Past studios have created:

“The Leaf” at Durham Central Park

The Floating Classroom at the DPS Hub Farm

”Rock Bottom” at the North Carolina Museum of Art
