You're Invited...to Spend Time in Nature!
Durham Parks and Recreation’s Outdoor Recreation Unit invites you to spend some time in nature with us at the new Environmental Education Pavilion at West Point on the Eno.
Last summer, the North Carolina State University School of Design’s Summer Design Studio designed and built a beautiful pavilion overlooking a sprawling meadow on the north side of West Point on the Eno Park. The project, funded by Durham Parks Foundation and various other supporters, was completed in ten short weeks during the heat of the summer and gave us a perfect place to present nature-based programming and to invite our community to explore the outdoors.
Prior to the completion of the Environmental Education Pavilion, the Durham Parks and Recreation Outdoor Recreation unit did not have a specific programming area. Programs were led at many of the beautiful parks around the city but there was not a location to have a home base. Beginning in the Fall of 2018, upon the completion of the new pavilion, we were able to begin planning and offering environmental education programming at the new pavilion. In addition, new programs were developed for the community with keeping the new space in mind.
If you are looking for something to do in the afternoon and have questions about nature, please join us for Explore Nature Drop-in Hours. On alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays, the pavilion is open from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. with free hands-on activities and answers to your questions. Stop by to check out a nature backpack filled with fun tools (binoculars, a magnifying glass, compass, etc.) for going on a short hike along the trails nearby. Additionally, you can experience first-hand the progress being made on our wildlife habitat restoration project.
Currently the meadow below the pavilion is being restored to a native prairie with grasses and plants suited for pollinators and other wildlife. In the meantime, enjoy the sights of birds on feeders and nesting songbirds. The meadow is also a perfect place for our ever-popular astronomy programs, which you can find out more by visiting the calendar on our website. Finding ourselves next door to the Eno River, we began offering our Float with Floats program, where we fit everyone in a PFD (Personal Flotation Device) and bob down the river after enjoying a soda float. All of these and more can be found by visiting our website or in our most recently published Play More Guide.
