Summer Fun Recap at Edison Johnson
When you think about summer, the words relaxing, carefree, and restful might come to mind. It can be a time of year, especially for children, when schedules change, activities are paused, and responsibilities lessen. Summer is also a great time to keep children active and engaged. It’s an opportunity to learn new things and explore new places.
Edison Johnson Recreation Center offered some fun new programs this summer for kids of various ages, as well as some returning favorites. These programs kept their minds and bodies active, and gave them something fun to do while out of school.
Kid Fit kept toddlers and preschoolers active with a fun, energetic mix of stretching, balance, and agility exercises. They were able to express themselves and explore what they are capable of in a safe fitness environment. Not only did they burn energy and gain confidence, they also practiced their social skills like following directions, waiting for their turn, and cheering for their classmates. Preschoolers also had a chance to take their drawing and coloring skills outdoors at Color the Park. In this fun laid-back program children and their parents enjoyed creating together, keeping their minds active through art. If you were at Edison Johnson after this program you would see amazing art all over the sidewalks, courtyard, and trail!
Older children also had an opportunity to show their creative side. Canvas and Cupcakes brought out the artist in children ages 3-5. Each child painted their own canvas, following along with the instructor to create a masterpiece of their own. After the fun of painting and creating, they relaxed with a sweet treat and admired their work. Makers Monday is an opportunity for children to create a “do-it-yourself” project with guidance from the instructor. Each session features a different project. This is a great program for children to practice their creativity and keep their minds active.
Teens on Weights is a high-energy program that increases health and fitness for teens in a positive and motivating environment. It’s a great workout that includes body weight exercises, cardio circuits, and much more. It’s a challenge that will leave teens tired and feeling great! There’s still time to try this program – it continues throughout the summer, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
If you’re looking for things to do on your own or as a family, there are plenty of other reasons to visit Edison Johnson Recreation Center…

- The outdoor fitness equipment for teens and adults is a great place to get a work out. Whether you’re walking the trail or taking the kids to the playground, stop by and check it out. Add a little exercise to your day. Each piece conveniently offers exercise suggestions.
- The playground is always popular, and the sprayground is open for the season too! There’s a large shade umbrella to give you a break from the summer sun, plus picnic tables and grills nearby in case you want to enjoy a picnic while you’re there.
- There are two great walking options – the Ellerbee Creek Trail which is adjacent to Edison Johnson, and the natural trail at Rock Quarry Park. There is a new Track Trail here, which provides self-guided tours that turn your walk into an exciting outdoor experience. Kids can also track their adventures to win prizes at www.kidsinparks.com.
