Coming this October: Youth Sports Sampler, FIT Lab, History Tours & More!

We're only a few short weeks away from October and we have a great line-up of events, activities, and programs for all ages! Whether you are ready to kick start your fitness routine in-person or register for a virtual program, here is a go-to guide highlighting what to mark on your calendar and make sure you're in attendance. For the most up-to-date information about our programs, make sure you regularly check ActiveNet as well as our website!

OCT 1

  • Park Lab HIIT: Come out to an early morning of some High Intensity Interval Training exercises and kick start your weekday at the Park Lab. We will perform different body weight exercises, and push our limits while outside. Participants should bring water and wear athletic wear that is comfortable. This class is held at the Park Lab in downtown Durham. 
  • Synergy: A full body workout using dumbbells, resistance bands, and body weight exercises to work all muscle groups. From your legs to your arms, we'll hit them all! High repetitions to build muscle endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, balance and overall mind-body health. All fitness levels welcome, modifications will be shown to allow you to take it up a notch or to work at your own pace. 
OCT 12
  • Virtual Home School Creations: Bring out your inner artist and enjoy DIY style art projects. Participants will enjoy making handmade crafts and creations. Supplies will be provided through contactless pick-up on October 9.
OCT 14
  • Youth Sports Sampler: This sampler is designed to introduce different sports, basic fundamentals of each sport, and provide exposure to multiple DPR athletic facilities across Durham. The sampler promotes an atmosphere of fun and learning in a controlled safe environment. Activities offered include disc golf, cornhole, golf and kickball. Offered for ages 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12.
  • Fun Caravan: Fun Caravan is a mobile recreation program that brings recreation to communities throughout Durham by providing a variety of fun, active, and recreational experiences for families with children up to 12 years old. The program offers a variety of unstructured activities in the park. All children must be supervised by a caregiver at least 16 years old. Preregistration required to permit acceptable social distancing between family groups. Please register all family members who will be in attendance. Weather permitting, we will be at a park near you!
OCT 17
  • Explore Nature Drop-In Hours: Explore West Point on the Eno as you may have never before! Enjoy hands-on nature and science activities and take on a hike along the nearby trails! No cost, but pre-registration is required for this program. Youth participants must be accompanied by a registered adult. All participants regardless of age must be registered.
OCT 22
  • Virtual Strength & Conditioning: Participants will learn anatomy and be coached through exercises that promote Flexibility and develop Core Strength. This program is designed for individuals with disabilities, but all are welcome to participate! The program is being offered using the Zoom online platform. Participants will be emailed the Zoom link 24 hours prior to the start of the program.
  • Virtual Cards for Heroes: Cards are a thoughtful way to show appreciation. Join us to make cards for Veterans Day, which will be delivered to local Veterans. We will provide the materials, and you can follow one of the templates, or create a design of your own! Supplies will be available for contactless pick-up at Edison Johnson Recreation Center on 10/19/20.
OCT 24
  • Bull City Reels on Wheels: Come on out for a movie on the big screen and enjoy it from the comfort of your vehicle. Food trucks will be available so be sure to bring your appetite. Gates open one hour before showtime. This is a free event but pre-registration is required. Reserve you parking spot today. You must remain in your car unless visiting a food truck or the restroom and when out of your vehicle, masks are required. Please visit the DPR website for a full list of rules and answers to FAQs. The event is rain or shine but if the wind is too high or weather is too severe we will reschedule the movie to the next night. 
OCT 30
  • Virtual Vamp It Up: Calling all friendly vampires, ghosts, and goblins. You are invited to a costume party! Dress in your Halloween best and enjoy some spectacular games, crafts, and fun. Supplies will be provided by contactless pick-up at Edison Johnson Recreation Center on October 23.

ONGOING

  • West Point History Tours: Take a guided tour of West Point on the Eno's historic buildings and grounds. While visiting the West Point Mill, McCown-Mangum House, and Hugh Mangum Museum of Photography, you will hear stories about the people who lived, worked, and played here. [Sundays, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.]
  • Leigh Farm History Tours: Take a guided-tour of Leigh Farm Park. You'll learn about the families who lived here, their work, and life on a middle-class plantation. Venture inside the historic farmhouse while also visiting the enslaved people's cabin, speakeasy, and the Leigh Family Cemetery. [Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m.]
