Play With Me: Children's Books [Part 3]

By: Shannon Mallery, Program Assistant Sr. - Mature Adults

We're continuing the Play With Me series focused on children's books that you can read to the special children in your life over your device. We have chosen books that are the core of "The books I would bring to a desert island" list. They are fun, interesting and easy to read to little ones.

Each week's post will have a "review" of five books suitable for children two to five years of age but will most assuredly be loved by you and slightly older siblings as well.

Tips:
  • Some of the books are not currently in print but can be found on used booksellers' websites.
  • You may want to consider having your little one follow along with their own copy.
  • When reading make sure you are in a well lit area and that your child can hear you clearly.
  • Hold the picture up to the screen for a little bit when you are done reading each page so that your little one can see it.
  • Read the book out loud a few times to yourself before reading it to your child so that you can add emphasis as you read.

Imagine!
By: Raul Colon
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Read time: 6 minutes

Imagine is a story told through pictures. A boy rides his skateboard from his home over the Brooklyn bridge into Manhattan to visit the Museum of Modern Art. There he makes friends with some of the "permanent" residents of the museum. Together they go on an adventure all around the city. The illustrations in Imagine! are so earnestly rendered that after you put this book down you will feel as if you have "read" it. Imagine! will expose your young one to the themes of art, museums and imagination.

Tar Beach
By: Faith Ringgold
Scholastic Inc.
Read time: 5 minutes

Tar Beach is told from the point of view of eight year old Cassie Louise Lightfoot. Through the lenses of imagination and reality that children experience their lives through we see into Cassie's life. It is a story of spirit, love and the strength that children posses. Cassie uses her power of imagination to triumph over the things she cannot control in her life and to experience the beauty of the world around her.

Tucker's Apple-Dandy Day
By: Susan Winget
Scholastic Inc.
Read time: 4 minutes

Tucker and his classmates go on a trip to the Apple farm in Tucker's Apple-Dandy Day. Each friend needs to have a little help from Tucker and they help him in return. There is fun, food and friendship in this book and it is one of my children's favorites. The illustrations are warm and inviting with the types of details small children love. It is a great cozy read, perfect for Fall.

I am a Bunny
By: Ole Risom
Illustrated by: Richard Scarry
A Golden Book
Read time: 2 minutes

I am a Bunny is a classic. It is narrated by Nicholas the bunny who tells you what he likes to do in each season. Each page has an illustration that is very clear and detailed allowing the reader to see exactly what Nicholas sees. Children will relate to the outdoor pleasures that Nicholas enjoys each season. The simple text and vibrant pictures make this a great book to talk about the seasons with your child.

A Child's Calendar
Poems by: John Updike
Illustrations by: Trina Schart Hyman
Holiday House New York
Read time: 6 minutes

To say that A Child's Calendar is a book that has a poem and illustration for each month would be accurate but grossly inadequate. A Child's Calendar captivates me every time I read it, which is about once a month. As each month turns into the next I read this book to my children. They have gotten to know the family that it follows through the months of the year. Both the poetry and illustrations in this book depict the seasons and real family life so accurately that I continue to be moved every time I read it.

As early Fall treats us to some truly splendid days I hope this week's segment of Play With Me has sparked your interest in some books you can share with the young children in your life. Next week is the final installment of Play With Me: Children's books series. I may be tempted to sneak in a bonus book or two. Until then Stay active and remember to Play More with DPR!
