Play With Me: Children's Books [Part 4]

By: Shannon Mallery, Program Assistant Sr. - Mature Adults

We're continuing the Play With Me series focused on children's books that you can read to the special children in your life over your device. We have chosen books that are the core of my "The books I would bring to a desert island" list. They are fun, interesting and easy to read to little ones.

Tips:
  • Some of the books are not currently in print but can be found on used booksellers' websites.
  • You may want to consider having your little one follow along with their own copy.
  • When reading make sure you are in a well lit area and that your child can hear you clearly.
  • Hold the picture up to the screen for a little bit when you are done reading each page so that your little one can see it.
  • Read the book out loud a few times to yourself before reading it to your child so that you can add emphasis as you read.

How To
By: Julie Morstad
Simply Read Books
Read time: 4 minutes

It is hard for me to write about how to as simply a story or book. It is an experience. Julie Morstad illustrates the moments of life that make being a child so special. It reveals the hearts of children for who they are; in their space, in their time. Your little one will feel comforted, connected and inspired by the children in this book. how to is a celebration to be shared with the ones you love.

Peanut Butter Rhino
By: Vincent Andriani
Scholastic Inc.
Read time: 3 minutes

Peanut Butter Rhino is very funny if you are a grown up and hilarious if you are a little kid. I will spoil the surprise because it is too good to keep to myself. This book is about a Rhinoceros that gets a peanut butter sandwich stuck to it's bottom. Need I say more- in short it is a classic.

Feast For 10
By: Cathryn Falwell
Scholastic Inc./Houghton Mifflin Company
Read time: 4 minutes

Feast For 10 has the winning combination of bright pictures, food and smiling faces. It tells the story of a trip to the grocery store and a family working together. It is also a counting book with pictures that your little one can count up to ten. What is especially nice is that when you get to ten the book starts over and counts to ten again. Allowing your little one to practice their counting skills twice. I also like that it shows the family recycling and using paper recyclable grocery bags.

The Quiet Book
By: Deborah Underwood
Illustrated by: Renata Liwska
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Read time: 4 minutes

The Quiet Book is one of the sweetest children's books. It captures a moment(s) that we never really think about but is actually a big part of being a little kid, the times that you are quiet and why. Both the tone of the pictures and writing of this book are quiet however, the feelings it will make you feel are loud! If you are looking for a book that calls to light some of the tender moments of childhood this is the book for you.

Flotsam
By: David Wiesner
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Read time: 6 minutes 30 seconds

Flotsam is an enchanting illustrated book with no words. Each illustration pulls you further and further into underwater worlds full of surprises both human and fantastical. You and your child will want to look closer and closer and longer and longer at the pictures to see what you always hoped was under the waves.

For this final installment of the Play With Me: Children's Books series ages two to five I am adding two bonus books. I could not make a list of recommended children's books without adding them. They are bonus books because they are not books that you read in one sitting. They are books that your little one will want to read time and time again. Each time finding something new to enjoy.

Bonus Book #1: Children Just Like Me
By: Barnabas & Anabel Kindersley

Children Just Like Me is a book that features children from all around the world. It introduces the reader to the child's family, school and home life. We have been reading and rereading this book for years. It is wonderful. Children love to hear about children from all over the world, it makes them feel connected on their level. As a grown up I also enjoy learning about the children and discussing other cultures featured in this book with my children. It is a must have.
Bonus Book #2: One Minute till Bedtime - 60 Second Poems to Send You Off To Sleep
Selected by: Kenn Nesbitt
Art by: Christoph Niemann
Little, Brown and Company

One Minute till Bedtime is one of the best children's poetry books I have ever read for three simple reasons 1. It features a wide variety of poets and themes. 2. All the poetry is written for children. 3. The illustrations in this book are wonderfully inventive, fresh and fun. One Minute till Bedtime has so many quick but delightful poems you could start a new "goodnight" tradition with your little one.
