Play With Me: Ages 6-9 [Part 2]

By: Shannon Mallery, Program Assistant Sr. - Mature Adults

This week of Play With Me: Ages 6-9 continues the Art series! We will be making Pom Pom Shakers. Play With Me is a series of interactive and meaningful activities that you can do over technology with the children in your life.

Before getting started, adult assistance will be needed to help collect and setup supplies for the children. Consider sending the supply list ahead of time so the adult can prepare in advance.

Supplies/Setup
  • Tissue & Crepe paper
  • Markers
  • Scissors (age appropriate)
  • Clear packing tape
  • Masking tape
  • Paper from a magazine, scrapbook paper or thick wrapping paper
  • Paper tube, the stronger the better. I used one from the plastic wrap packaging.

Pom Pom Shakers
You will each make your own Pom Pom Shaker. The idea is to cover the tube with tissue and crepe paper so that the paper is fluffy and will move when you shake it. They are fun to make and fun to shake. We use ours to cheer for each other spontaneously "Go Mommy awesome hand washing!" You can also make it in your favorite team colors for game day!

You can add color and pattern with markers.

Then fold the tissue paper sheet in half and snip it into strips with scissors.

Do not snip all the way to the top of the sheet leave a little area that is solid.

Tape the solid part of the tissue paper to the tube with the fringes pointing down.

Masking tape works well.

Use more layers of paper until the tube is covered.

Notice that the blue layer is cut with a curved edge instead of in strips to add variety.

The crepe paper can be attached in long strips.

Once the tube is covered you can make the handle.

Use your wrapping paper to cut out a circle a little larger then the top of the tube.

Place the circle of wrapping paper on top of the tube and push the edges down.

Then wrap a piece of paper around the tube covering the edges of the wrapping paper.

I used a magazine page made more fun by adding stripes of color with magic markers.

Once you have done that you may want to add a layer of clear packing tape over the handle to make it more durable.

Viola! Your shaker is done!

You and your child can take turns cheering for each other, Yay! Grandma makes the best brownies! Yay Caroline is a great reader! Yay Auntie is the best hugger! Yay Daniel is the best teeth brusher!

Next week's Play With Me: Art series will finish out with a challenge for our artful puzzlers! We hope you are enjoying these perfect weather days and remember Play More with DPR!
