Up Close with Nature: Art Spot - Leigh Farm Park

By: Shannon Mallery, Program Assistant Sr. - Mature Adults

Durham Parks and Recreation would like to invite you to use the parks as subject matter for your art. With an eye for art we have taken a closer look at our parks and are inviting you too as well. We have found the most artistically inspiring places in our parks and we want to encourage you to use them for everything from painting what is in bloom to photographing a newly engaged couple. These artistically inspiring places in our parks are Art Spots. We will feature new Art Spots periodically so please be on the lookout for them. The first Art Spot we will feature is Leigh Farm Park.

The day that we visited Leigh Farm Park was clear and beautiful. We had a chance to walk  around and discover what was there in the warming rays of the sun. Leigh Farm Park is old and was once the home to a family of over twenty. There are remains of gardens and enclaves of fig trees. It is truly a lovely spot only made lovelier by the passage of time. There are several spots that provide long range views and others that frame the scenery just so.

During our visit we concentrated on some of these views but also the Scuppernong grape arbor that can be found there. The vines at over 100 yrs old may be considered among some of the oldest in the area. The vines are now full and lush twisting and turning through sun and shade. This is however a fairly new view of the arbor. Until about fifteen years ago it lay in almost disrepair. At that time is was rescued with the help of a volunteer, Mike Shelby. Who has brought it back to life and cares for it to this day.

Up Close with Nature: Art Spot - Leigh Farm Park provided both long views and close up details that we hope you will find inspiring enough to visit and capture for your own. The long views are the grape arbor from the cypress tree, the side of the fig tree enclosure, and the end of the trail.

The details are from the fig trees and along the forest trail.

The Mature Adult team was certainly taken with the beauty of Leigh Farm Park. We felt like we were walking in a picture and are happy to have it be the first of our UP Close with Nature- Art Spots. We would like to know what you think and would love to see any art that has been created from your visit.
