Play With Me: Children's Books Ages 6-9 [Part 2]

By: Shannon Mallery, Program Assistant Sr. - Mature Adults

This week continues the Play With Me ages six to nine book review series. In it we will review books that you can read to or along with the special children in your life over your device. We have chosen books that are fun to read and explore the magic of childhood, friendship and family.

Each week's "review" will be of two books suitable for children six to nine years of age. Children 6 and 7 years old will enjoyed you reading to them and children 8 and 9 years old will enjoy discussing the books that you both read independently.

Tips:
  • When reading to your child make sure you are in a well lit area and that your child can hear you clearly.
  • All of the books are chapter books and will not have a lot, if any pictures so it will help when reading them aloud to remind your child who each character is.
  • Read sections of the book out loud to yourself before reading it to your child so that you can practice adding emphasis as you read and maybe even develop different voices for each character.
  • Jot down anything you enjoy about the book and any questions you may want to ask your child that relate to the story as you are reading. This way you will have some ideas for what to talk about with your child once you are both done reading the book.

Scout is a smart dog that finds himself along with his best friend Matt a twelve year old boy on interesting and sometimes dangerous adventures. Scout Storm Dog is the third book in the series about this pair of friends. Matt's family is part of the US National Guard and United States Armed Forces and move around a lot, always providing new and exciting backdrops for the action of the series to take place in. This adventure takes place in Puetro Rico set shortly after a devastating hurricane. Matt and Scout meet new friends Luisa a girl around Matt's age and Rosita a "sato" or street dog. Together they have a few close calls but are able to make it through to safety while making things a little better for some of those effected by the hurricane along the way.

The Spell of Chuchuchan
Written By: Elfreida Read
Illustrated by By: Betty Fraser
Published by: The World Publishing Company
Theme: Magic & China
Main Character: Girl
Series: No

The main character in the Spell of Chuchuchan is a little girl named Kei-Lin who is compelled to go on a magical journey to find the secret of happiness in order to free her cousin Linza. Flying from mythical god to mythical god on the back of her friend a magical dragon that just delightfully appears out of nowhere Kei- Lin shows bravery, determination and devotion to her family. She encounters many but not always friendly magical places where she has to overcome an obstacle in order to get closer to her goal of freeing her cousin. This is definitely a girls can do book. Set among the stars in the night sky and among mythical gods the overall feeling I had when reading this book was otherworldly, I appreciated being transported to another place and celebrating the courage of Kei-Lin.

Some of the best books to read to or with children are out of print. Used online booksellers are a very good source to buy out of print books. Below is a link to an article that reviews some of them. I have personally used Thrift Books. When deciding which used book seller to buy from I looked at reviews for several online sellers and found that most had satisfied and un-satisfied customers. I would suggest looking for the book you want to buy to see which online used book seller is selling it and then do a search online to see if the company selling that book is legitimate and has satisfied customers before you purchase from them.

This week of Play With Me brought us face to face with brave boys and girls. I know that we are all being brave during this time. We at DPR applaud each and everyone of you for the courage you have shown in keeping yourselves, your loved one and the community safe and healthy. Thank you! Next week concludes the Play With Me: Children's books series until then Stay strong, Do something that makes you smile and remember to Play More with DPR!
