Coming this May: Rock the Bell, Bike Rodeo & Flower Moon Hike

It's gonna be May...and that means another month of DPR activities for all ages! From Bike Rodeo and Tabata Training to Rock the Bell and Flower Moon Hike, we've prepared this monthly go-to guide highlighting what to mark on your calendar and make sure you're in attendance. MAY 5
  • Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower: Join us in the meadow at the West Point on the Eno Environmental Education Pavilion as we watch the spectacle. The Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower is a meteor shower associated with Halley's Comet. Bring your own blankets or chairs and dress for the weather. Viewing session is 2 hours long and every person attending must be registered regardless of age. Youth under 16 must be accompanied by a registered adult.
MAY 6
  • Rock the Bell: Challenge yourself and try something new, come Rock the Bell and see if kettlebell fitness is for you! Rock the Bell is a high intensity workout using kettlebells. Kettlebell workouts get your heart pumping and uses up to 20 calories per minute - about as much as running a 6-minute mile. This program will be held outside at Edison Johnson Recreation Center.
  • Teen HIIT Fitness: Teen HIIT will get you fit! Participants will see improvements in strength, agility, and overall fitness. This teen fitness program will introduce a HIIT (High-intensity Interval Training) to get you moving. This class will be held outside in person at Edison Johnson Recreation Center.
MAY 8
  • Leigh Farm Park Tour: Take a guided tour of Leigh Farm Park. You will learn about the families who lived here, their work, and life on a middle class plantation. Venture inside the historic farmhouse while also visiting the slave cabin, speakeasy, and the Leigh Family Cemetery.
  • West Point Park Tour: Take a guided tour of West Point on the Eno's historic buildings and grounds. While visiting the West Point Mill, McCown-Mangum House, and Hugh Mangum Museum of Photography, you will hear stories about the people who lived, worked, and played here.
MAY 13
  • Virtual Bingo: Join us for a game of Bingo! You can play online or print out a card. It's a slower paced game but all are welcome to participate! The program is being offered using the Zoom online platform. Participants will be emailed the Zoom link and the link for the online Bingo cards 24 hours prior to the start of the program.
  • Hip Hop & Paint: Time to Turn Up with painting, hip hop music, and conversation! Enjoy an evening of painting with all canvas paint and brushes included, Hip hop music provided. Spaces go fast for this course so get yours ASAP.
MAY 20
  • Family Fitness Frenzy: Come out and take a breath of fresh air at Old North Durham Park! Bring your family out! We will do a variety of different bodyweight exercises together. Each exercise will have modifications so everyone can work out at the same time while having fun, and getting our bodies stronger.
MAY 22
  • Bike Rodeo: This program is a collaboration between DPR and Durham Police Department geared for youth to learn how to safely ride their bikes. Stations will be set up and instructed by Durham Police Department personnel on basic bike maintenance, how to properly brake, overall bike safety while riding your bike and fitting your helmet and bike properly for use. Participants are asked to bring their own bike. If a child does not have a bike, a used reconditioned bike from Durham Bicycle Cooperative will be provided for the youth to borrow at the rodeo. Each participant will receive a free helmet from NCDOT Bicycle and Pedestrian Divisions’ Helmet Initiative Program. Participants should wear closed toed shoes and comfortable clothing. Registration is required and space is limited.
  • Explore Nature Drop In Hours: Explore West Point on the Eno as you may have never before! Enjoy hands-on nature and science activities and take on a hike along the nearby trails! No cost, but pre-registration is required for this program. Youth participants must be accompanied by a registered adult. Please note that everyone must be pre-registered individually in order to participate.
MAY 26
  • Flower Moon Hike: Explore the trails of West Point on the Eno Park as the full moon rises overhead on this guided hike. Dress for the weather and in comfortable shoes you can hike in. We will provide lights but feel free to bring your own. Children must be accompanied by an adult for this program. No cost but pre-registration is required.
