Become a Citizen Science Super-Hero
By: Annette Smith, Grants and Special Projects Analyst, Sr
A Bioblitz is a community science initiative to help catalog the biodiversity of a local area in a short time period.
The Ellerbe Creek Bioblitz 2021 began Friday, September 24th and goes through Sunday, October 3rd. This is your opportunity to become a citizen science super-hero! Get outside and have fun learning about the nature around us while generating data that can be used for science and conservation.
This fun and nature-packed week is brought to you by an incredible partnership of organizations led by Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association and including Keep Durham Beautiful, the Eno River Association, NC Museum of Life and Science, El Futuro, Burt’s Bees Foundation, Merrick-Moore Community Development Corporation and many more.
Durham Parks Foundation is partnering with the New Hope Audubon Society and Urban Community Agronomics for Birding 101 and East End Park on Saturday, October 2nd, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and later the same day (11:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m.) will be working with the Bragtown Community Association and Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association to host a plant swap at Red Maple Park.
The Fall 2021 Bioblitz is scheduled to encourage residents to observe and record Monarch butterflies which are traveling through our area on their annual migration to Mexico. Your observations will support of the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge announced at the June 21, 2021 City Council meeting.
Head to your local park, nature preserve, or even your own backyard to discover the plants and animals that are living there! Simply download the free iNaturalist app from the App Store, and begin taking pictures of all the nature around you. Optionally, you can join the Ellerbe Creek bioblitz project to see all of the observations from fellow participants and learn even more about life in this watershed.
There are a series of exciting in-person events ranging from bird walks to moth watches to litter cleanups and more! Registration for these events may be limited, and masks are required if you are unvaccinated. There will be another opportunity for Durham’s Citizen Scientists to take action in the spring 2022. Stay tuned!
