Support your Local Parks on Giving Tuesday

It's Giving Tuesday and we hope you consider making a end of year gift to support your local parks! Durham’s parks and trails have been a respite for many as we weather through the pandemic. Your gift will support our many projects that preserve, strengthen and expand parks, trails and open space in Durham!
2020 was tough for all of us – for Durham Parks Foundation (DPF), 2020 was a pause in work as we rely on volunteers to help us with everything we do!
Once we were able to gather, safely, outside, DPF jumped at the opportunity to host Plant the Prairie events at the Piedmont Prairie at West Point on the Eno Park. With funding support from individual donors and the Burt’s Bees Greater Good Foundation we installed a second phase of native grasses and pollinators in May and June! Our amazing volunteers planted over 10,000 plants over 5 days! The rains of the early summer were so helpful! We have a new section of the Piedmont Prairie thriving!
The section of the prairie installed in 2019 is also well established. This section is already making local pollinators very happy.
Art slows traffic: DPF worked with the City of Durham’s Transportation Department and the Cultural and Public Art program on a project funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies to install a mural in a busy intersection to slow traffic. The chosen intersection was Club Boulevard and Glendale Avenue. This intersection serves Club Boulevard Elementary School, Northgate Park and the crossing of the Ellerbe Creek Trail into the park. A volunteer committee selected Durham artist Candy Carver to design and lead the installation of a major mural. We installed the mural in late May and early data is indicating that drivers, are indeed, slowing down as they traverse the intersection.
Sponsorships for Citywide Festivals, Durham Senior Games and the NC: The City of Durham hosted the 2021 US Tennis Association NC 40 & Over State Championship Tournament in June Durham Parks Foundation was a proud sponsor of this event.
2022 will be a GRAND year! We have supported the City’s engagement process with the Merrick Moore neighborhood and surrounding community to design the landscape, play features and other amenities at the new park on Hoover Road. DPF has received funding (thank you again Burt’s Bees Greater Good Foundation) to add native plants to attract wildlife and pollinators this spring and are raising funds so that we can install fruit and nut trees at this park in the fall. The athletic fields at this park will be open for play in the spring of 2022.
We will be hosting Plant the Prairie events at West Point on the Eno in April and May.
We will host a dedication for the beautiful Larry Stogner History Grove installed at Sandy Creek Park. This space was created with funds from the Durham County Matching Grant program and many generous donations from the Friend of Sandy Creek Park and friend and family of Larry Stogner.
The renovated Rock Quarry Park will reopen this spring, just in time for us to gather at festivals. These renovations include a donated musical playground. This equipment was donated by the Duke University Rotaract Club with additional donations from Durham Rotary to install trees around the playground.
The new dog park at Rock Quarry Park will also open this spring, with support from funds raised at the annual Barktoberfest and many individual donations.
