Row Row Row Your Boat, DPR's 2023 Lake Season is Here

It's our favorite time of the year! Our City Lakes are now officially open! Little River and Lake Michie opened to the public Friday, March 10, and will remain open through Monday, November 6, 2023. Lake hours are from 6:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. The lakes will also be open on the following holidays:
  • Good Friday
  • Easter Sunday
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day

DPR's City Lakes are managed by our Outdoor Recreation unit. They offer outdoor recreation and environmental education programs for all ages. From kayaking programs to nature hikes, cave exploration to lunar exploration, and moonlight geo paddles to overnight camping experiences, we have a multitude of opportunities for you and your friends and family to enjoy the outdoors together. The majority of our programs do not require prior experience and equipment is generally provided.

Bank Fishing is offered at Little River and Lake Michie. N.C. Wildlife Resource Commission fishing licenses are required. Did you know, Lake Michie offers some of the finest largemouth bass fishing in the Piedmont? When visiting Little Michie, consider launching your own boat for a relaxing day of fishing without the hassles found at larger lakes. Lake Michie also offers an ADA accessible boat house, dock, and canoe/kayak launch.

At Little River Lake, you can rent a canoe or kayak for $11 or less. This year, Durham Parks and Recreation will phase out battery and motor boat rentals at Little River Lake to move toward more environmentally and financially sustainable non-motorized options. Fishing kayaks will be available for rent.

Lake Fees

Fees will be charged at each lake during the 2023 season. For specific fee information, visit the Lake Michie page and the Little River Lake page.

Please note, we do not give refunds or free rentals. To receive the Play More Card discount, you must show your Play More Card to the attendant. Visit our Play More Card page for more information on the benefits program.
