Women's History Spotlight: Tammy Brown

March is Women's History Month. What started off as Women's History Week, this month-long event has been celebrated annually since 1987 and is a chance to learn more about the vital contributions that women have made in creating a shared American history.

The history of park service, recreation centers, and national park assistance is vibrant and effervescent, with a collage of people of diverse gender, race, and age. In honor of Women's History Month, Durham Parks & Recreation celebrates its women leaders. Currently, DPR employs 152 women, including 9 in leadership roles.

Join us as we celebrate some of the talented women at DPR who make things happen as a result of their hard work, commitment to Durham residents, and strong leadership.

Introducing Tammy Brown

Recreation Manager, Athletics

What led you to DPR?

I was very interested in placing myself in a position where I could have an effect on a child/adult/senior's life by providing them with some type of recreational opportunities. I had an opportunity to do my internship with a Parks & Recreation Department which provided me with guidance that this type of work could assist me with my passion for recreation.

Why is it important for women to have a leadership position in Parks & Recreation?

Female leaders in positions of influence can serve a critical role to guide women to strive to advance their careers in many ways. They also can contribute to generating broader societal impacts on pay equity, changing workplace policies in ways that benefit both men and women, and attracting a more diverse workforce.

Women face many challenges such as flexible hours, remote working, motherhood, and finding a work-life balance. How do you empower yourself and the women around you through it all?

I often say "the struggle is real" when we are faced with the challenges of balancing our work-life responsibilities. With that, I always encourage others to place their family FIRST and maintain the balance needed to have a work-life balance. We often find our priorities in work and life situations by talking, sharing and just discussing our daily needs as those "long-term needs" are not often known at that time. Lead by example by showing your appreciation toward others and depend on your support group to help you face those challenges.

If you could only pick one, who is the most influential woman you know? How does she inspire you?

Justice Joan Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death in 2020.

How does she inspire you?

Mrs. Ginsburg started early in her life believing that women could have a different lifestyle than what they had in the United States during her younger years. She believed that the role of a woman could be more toward providing a stronger "leadership." Her leadership in fighting for women's rights inspired me at an early age. I spent time reading about her priorities in life and the struggles that she faced throughout her life. The most inspirational moment was to see how she fought her health struggles and continued to be a STRONG WOMAN LEADER in our justice system.
